Garcia Band, Jerry - garcia live vol. 10: may 20th 1990, hilo civic auditorium [2018]
2 CD-Set!

GarciaLive Volume Ten documents the Jerry Garcia Band’s May 20th, 1990 performance at the Hilo Civic Auditorium in Hawaii. On the heels of a diabetic coma in 1986, Bill Kreutzmann encouraged Jerry to find peace and healing in the pristine blue waters of the Big Island’s reef system. What was initially a hobby became a passion for Garcia as he later publicly advocated for the protection of Hawaii’s natural areas and directed earnings from this show, held in the modest Hilo Civic Center, to The Ocean Recreation Council of Hawaii.
In this relaxed setting complete with leis on stage, it’s no wonder that the music from this show shines so brightly – both in Garcia’s strong vocals and guitar playing but also the joie de vivre setlist spanning some of Jerry’s favorite corners of popular music – Dylan, Motown, Reggae, and Rock & Roll. Spurred on by the ever steady rhythm section of Dave Kemper and John Kahn, the Garcia band this night seemed to pull out all the stops complete with the celestial sounds of Melvin Seals’ organ and the background vocals of Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch.
The sum of these parts that defined the 1990s Garcia Band sound would make for a magical Sunday night that first kicked off with the Holland-Dozier-Holland favorite “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” followed by an idyllic “They Love Each Other.” Sprinkled in throughout the night are five Dylan covers including powerfully delivered vocals on versions of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” “Forever Young,” and a positively soaring “Tangled Up In Blue” as the encore. Along the way, covers like “Stop That Train,” “Waiting For A Miracle,” and “Evangeline” ably accent originals like “Deal” and “Run For The Roses.”

Garcia Band, Jerry - garcia live vol. 13: 09/16/1989, poplar creek music theatre [2020]
2 CD-Set! Die hervorragende Setlist bestand aus damit sehr raren Versionen vieler Garcia/Hunter-Standards, wie "Cats under the stars" oder "They love each other", aber auch höchst interessanten Covers wie beispielsweise Dylan's "I shall be released", The Beatles' "Dear Prudence", The Band's "The night they drove old dixie down" und vor allem einer raren, jammigen 10 Minuten-Fassung des Rolling Stones-Klassikers "Let's spend the night together".

It’s with great pleasure we share news of the next installment in the GarciaLive series — GarciaLive Volume 13: September 16th, 1989 Poplar Creek Music Theatre. For some, the number thirteen is filled with superstition, but we can comfortably say GarciaLive Volume 13 will only brighten your doorstep upon release on Friday, April 24th. The new release, like the previously issued Pure Jerry: Merriweather Post Pavilion, September 1 & 2, 1989 and Fall 1989: The Long Island Sound, once again puts a spotlight on the Jerry Garcia Band’s legendary September ’89 run, but with one BIG addition — the Big Man, Clarence Clemons.
Clemons, the tenor saxophone giant from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, joined the tour at the Meadowlands in northern New Jersey after first linking up with Garcia at the Grateful Dead’s New Year’s Eve 1988 performance in Oakland. Though he wasn’t well versed in the JGB’s repertoire at the start, Clarence’s deep knowledge of R&B and rock-n-roll made him a decidedly quick study — and by the time they hit Poplar Creek for the tour closer, they were really rolling! Garcia, already enjoying one of his best latter-day years following his recovery from a near-death experience, was in particularly fine form. His playing dexterous and down-right otherworldly at times. And as Blair Jackson writes in the liner notes, “Clarence is right there with him, bleating and honking and purring and sounding like all his influences—from Maceo Parker and Lee Allen to King Curtis and Junior Walker—rolled into one powerful package that was unmistakably Clarence Clemons. He’s definitely not laying back, and his assertiveness clearly pushes Garcia to play harder and louder and funkier at every turn.” While the setlist is fairly standard for the era, Clemons helps the band find new heights on old staples like The Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” and a pair of Garcia/Hunter originals, “Cats Under The Stars” and “They Love Each Other.” One relative rarity of note is a positively blistering take on The Rolling Stones’ romp “Let’s Spend The Night Together”, dusted off earlier in the year after having been absent since ’76, which closes set one spectacularly. Top to bottom, this one is filled with magic — and we’re delighted to share it with you.

Garcia Band, Jerry - garcia live vol. 16: madison square garden, nov. 15th 1991 [2021]
3 CD-Set!

GarciaLive Volume 16 finds the world's most recorded musician in the world's most famous arena at the midway point in one of his longest and most celebrated solo tours. While Garcia was no stranger to Madison Square Garden, November 15th marked the Jerry Garcia Band’s debut in the vaunted venue. Though just two months removed from the Grateful Dead's sold-out 9-night residency at the Garden, the crowd’s eruption as the houselights dimmed revealed the immense excitement for Garcia’s return. The buoyant set-opening “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” signaled the feeling was indeed mutual. Love remained a central theme throughout the evening with stunning versions of Smokey Robinson’s “The Way You Do The Things You Do," Van Morrison’s “He Ain’t Give You None” and “Bright Side of the Road," and Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate," among others. A near-automatic highlight of any latter era Jerry Garcia Band set, this performance of The Manhattan’s “Shining Star” is so poignant it became the centerpiece for the 2001 compilation of the same name. The extended takes on “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox” and “Don’t Let Go” which followed offered the band plenty of room to stretch out with the latter yielding the deepest improvisations of the evening. Not one to treat encores as de rigueur, Garcia finds the perfect sentiment to close the night with the timeless “(What A) Wonderful World” sending everyone home walking on air.

Garcia Band, Jerry - garcia live vol. 17: norcal '76 [2021]
3 CD-Set!

GarciaLive Volume 17: NorCal ’76 presents highlights from three* stand-out Jerry Garcia Band performances captured over the span of a week. While a myriad of challenges from reel damage to tape loss and other assorted technical difficulties spoil any opportunity to feature the complete performances, what remains of Betty Cantor-Jackson’s original recordings offers some of the finest performances from this iteration of the Jerry Garcia Band.

1976 marked a period of transition for Garcia. Having eschewed the jazz and funk explorations of the early ‘70s in favor of a more “traditional” rock & roll vibe with Nicky Hopkins, Garcia likely found a sense of comfort by welcoming his Grateful Dead bandmates Keith & Donna Jean Godchaux into the fold towards the top of the year. While the band could still light it up with the best of them, as evidenced here by blistering versions of “Mystery Train,” “After Midnight,” and the almost obligatory closer “Mighty High,” tempos often eased to a swamp blues feel while the group pursued more sweet, introspective territory. A review of the Davis performance described the evening as “mellifluous” and continued, “never before have I seen Garcia dance, nor have I ever seen him smile so much.” Look no further than vibrant versions of “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” “Stir It Up,” and “The Way You Do The Things You Do” for evidence of bliss. The sweetness is balanced by more pensive selections including poignant versions of “Catfish John,” bolstered by sublime harmonies from Donna Jean, and Irving Berlin's “Russian Lullaby.” Perhaps no performance better demonstrates the JGB’s power than the opening “Sugaree” which showcases Garcia’s fiery leads and impassioned vocal, Keith’s brilliant, understated accompaniment, and John Kahn & Ron Tutt’s deep pocket groove. It’s enough to put a smile on anyone’s face while giving you a few things to ponder at the same time.

*Caveat: “Mighty High” is sourced from an undated recording we suspect was made around this time.

Garcia Band, Jerry - garcia live vol. 19: oakland coliseum arena , oct. 31st 1992 [2022]
2 CD-Set!

In the summer of ’92, Garcia once again found himself in a perilous position as his health deteriorated so significantly he ultimately collapsed. His reemergence here on Halloween three months later, slimmed down and in great spirits, was a real sight for sore eyes for the 17,000 in attendance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. The setlist for the evening suggests the significance wasn’t lost on Garcia. Though hardly an uncommon opener, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” hints at Garcia’s gratitude for the outpouring of affection he received; while a poignant take on “The Maker” spins a tale of a “body bent and broken.” Thankfully this evening has more to it than just sentimentality – there are some exceptionally fine performances here too including a second set that’s among the decade’s best. This Halloween ’92 performance includes two performances cherry-picked for previously released compilations: “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox” from Shining Star and “Tangled Up in Blue” from Garcia Plays Dylan. The second set opening “Shining Star” is positively stunning with its lush harmonies and solos illustrating why Melvin Seals dubbed the group “the magic band.” Elsewhere, rollicking versions of “Lay Down Sally,” “You Never Can Tell [C’est Le Vie],” and the show closing “Werewolves of London” gave the fans plenty of opportunity to shake their bones.

Garcia Band, Jerry - garcia live vol. 20: caoe code, june 18th 1982 '76 [2023]
2 CD-Set!

GarciaLive Volume 20: June 18th, 1982 Cape Cod Coliseum presents the complete, previously unreleased Jerry Garcia Band performance in The Bay State’s vacationland – plus 45+ minutes of additional incendiary, uncirculated recordings captured on June 1st, 1981 at The Stone in San Francisco.
The early 80’s marked a transitional period for the Jerry Garcia Band. After beginning the decade with the lean & mean quartet showcased on After Midnight and GarciaLive Volume One, Garcia & John Kahn would go on to experiment with personnel configurations expanding the line-up considerably. By the time the Jerry Garcia Band rolled into the Cape Cod Coliseum co-headliners Bobby & the Midnites, the line-up included Grateful Dead bandmate Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Melvin Seals (organ), Jimmy Warren (electric piano) and Liz Stires & Julie Stafford (backing vocals). While the co-headline format limited each group to a single 90-minute set, Garcia’s 8-song set packed plenty of punch. The requisite “How Sweet It Is” opener wastes no time getting down to business with a galloping tempo punctuated by crisp solos from Garcia, Warren, & Seals. The relative rarity “Valerie,” marking its first appearance here on an archival release, and extended, show-stopping takes on “Dear Prudence” and “Don’t Let Go” follow to the crowd’s obvious delight. Other highlights from Cape Cod include a poignant take on Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate” and the freshly written “Run for the Roses.”
For the first time in the series, GarciaLive Volume 20 also includes a bit of filler. We turned to the Jerry Garcia Band’s June 1st, 1981 performance at The Stone in San Francisco to select four stand-outs from the previously uncirculated/unheard recordings including a high-octane performance of “After Midnight,” “Deal -> Tangled Up in Blue,” and Jimmy Cliff’s “Sitting In Limbo.”

Die komplette Setkist:

Disc 1:
1. How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) - 10:05
2.Valerie - 7:06
3. Dear Prudence - 13:56
4. Mississippi Moon - 9:48
5. Don’t Let Go - 19:04
6. Simple Twist of Fate - 12:19

Disc 2:
1. Run for the Roses - 6:47
2. They Love Each Other - 7:07
June 1st, 1981 - The Stone - San Francisco, CA:

Garcia Band, Jerry - garcia live vol. 2: august 5th 1990, greek theatre [2013]
2 CD-Set! Die Setlist ist voll mit spannenden Coverversionen, wie etwa Bob Dylan's "Tangled up in blue", Los Lobos' "Evangeline", Bob Marley's "Stop that train", Van Morrison's "And it stoned me", Little Milton's "That's what love will make you do", "Tears of rage" von The Band, und viele mehr. Großartig!

Aus der Original-Produktbeschreibung:
GarciaLive Volume Two captures the classic latter-era lineup of the Jerry Garcia Band in the very familiar surroundings of the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. Recorded during a fruitful period for the band, which has resulted in two previous releases (Jerry Garcia Band and How Sweet It Is), this show features a guest appearance by acclaimed banjo player Bela Fleck to kick off the second set with a fiery rendition of "Midnight Moonlight" and an otherworldly adventure on the Jimmy Cliff classic, "The Harder They Come."
The Jerry Garcia Band made use of their home turf in 1990, performing throughout the Bay Area an astounding 19 times in that year, including multiple runs at their adopted home of the Warfield Theatre. Jerry and the band, including longtime cohort John Kahn on bass, Melvin Seals on organ and David Kemper on drums, as well as “The Girls,” Jaclyn LaBranch and Gloria Jones on backing vocals, stretched out in the summer sun on this early August afternoon show. Highlights, beside the obvious fireworks created on stage with Fleck, include a lilting “Stop That Train” and a bouncy “My Sisters and Brothers.” But on this day, Garcia clearly had the Bard on his mind, lending his deft touch and heart wrenching vocals to Dylan chestnuts “Forever Young” and “Tears of Rage” before sending the crowd home with a bounce in their step after a mesmerizing “Tangled Up in Blue” show closer. Once again, this performance cements Dylan’s own sentiments that nobody had a touch with his songs quite like Garcia.

Garcia Band, Jerry - garcia live vol. 7: november 8th 1976, sophie's, palo alto [2016]
2 CD-Set! November 1976.

Hier die offizielle Produktbeschreibung:

GarciaLive returns with a new installment! GarciaLive Volume Seven showcases the Jerry Garcia Band’s November 8th, 1976 performance at Sophie’s in Palo Alto, California. Recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson, the original master reels were only recently re-discovered, along with a few other reels dubbed the “Houseboat Tapes”, and have been remastered for this release. It was the year of this recording that Donna Jean and Keith Godchaux first joined up with the Jerry Garcia Band. Their addition, along with Ron Tutt on drums and bassist John Kahn, helped form what would be one of the most durable lineups of the Garcia Band. In fact, earlier that year Garcia commented “I haven’t been as happy with any little performing group since Old And In The Way in terms of feeling ‘this is really harmonious, this is what I want to hear.’”
That harmonious vibe is especially present on this recording as well. Throughout the course of the evening, the band deftly melds gospel, rock, soul, and reggae to form their quintessential mid-70’s sound. As one astute critic pointed out, “More than any other Garcia band this one allows him room to run through all his guitar styles, often within a single song.” From the opening notes of “The Way You Do The Things You Do”, the band lock into a relaxed, but confident groove with Kahn & Tutt’s deep pocket providing the foundation for Jerry & Keith’s melodic exploration and rounded out by Donna Jean’s soulful harmonies. The Hunter/Garcia penned “Mission in the Rain” and Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” are particularly poignant and soulful while songs like Peter Rowan’s “Midnight Moonlight” and Hank Ballard’s “Tore Up Over You” provide the sparks bringing balance to the evening. A 22+ minute “Don’t Let Go” stands out not only for its length, but for its exercise in dynamics which further showcases Garcia’s comfort not only with the band, but the freedom found in playing smaller rooms tailor-made for they type of music he was looking to create.

Aus der offiziellen Produktbeschreibung:

GarciaLive Volume Eight presents the Jerry Garcia Band's November 23rd, 1991 performance at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI. The Fall ’91 tour as a whole is widely regarded as one of Garcia’s finest and this particular Saturday evening serves as a further testament to the legend. Fans in attendance at the Bradley Center braved an intense snowstorm and the audience's palpable energy and enthusiasm was a likely catalyst for this spirited performance. Keyboardist Melvin Seals summarized the group nicely stating "That was the magic band. It’s not that the other scenarios didn’t work out but once we got to that level of the band with (drummer) Dave Kemper, John Kahn, Jerry, myself and the singers, Jackie (LaBranch) and Gloria (Jones) we all knew we had something special. That was the band. And magic they made! As Dean Budnick notes in the release’s liner note essay, "If at times the Grateful Dead could be something of a turgid Russian novel: convoluted and labyrinthine yet mostly rewarding, the Jerry Garcia Band during this era was more of an Elizabethan sonnet: breezy, emotive and luminous.” The tone is set immediately with a melodious “Cats Under The Stars” opening the evening to the sheer delight of the crowd. Playful and buoyant versions of “Lay Down Sally”, “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox”, and “Deal”, along with an incendiary “Tangled Up In Blue” build into peak after peak. The marvelous evening is balanced by soul-soaked performances of “That Lucky Old Sun”, “My Sisters and Brothers” and a positively show-stopping take on The Manhattan’s “Shining Star” which showcases Jerry and the girls singing in beautiful harmony. As the Garcia Band graduated into arenas it could be expected that some of the intimacy might be lost, but on this cold, snowy evening in Milwaukee, they managed to make the Bradley Center feel cozy and warm.
