Garcia, Jerry - garcia live vol. 11: nov. 1th 1993, providence civic center [2019]
2 CD-Set! When The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game".

Hier ein Original U.S.-Review:

This show from a soundboard source (recorded by John Cutler) is from '93 in Providence, Rhode Island. The band is Garcia, John Kahn-bass, David Kemper-drums, Melvin Seals-keyboards, and Jacklyn LaBranch and Gloria Jones-vocals. This was perhaps Garcia's best band away from his usual job with the Dead.
The set lists have several songs heard on earlier Garcia Band releases like "Mission In The Rain", "Simple Twist Of Fate", and "Don't Let Go". But also here are relative rarities like Van Morrison's "He Ain't Give You None", and the great Smokey Robinson's "When The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game". Also here is a good version of the Hunter-Garcia tune "Cats Under The Stars", plus another nice version of "The Way You Do The Things You Do", and the Beatles' "Dear Prudence". But a real high point is the lengthy "Don't Let Go", with both Garcia and Seals taking things up to another level or two musically with some great solos. But other lengthy tunes also have their own delights for JGB fans. The show ends with an electrified version of Peter Rowan's "Midnight Moonlight", which somehow feels right.
The band at this stage had really meshed into a fine unit, with the rhythm section perfectly underpinning Garcia's vocals and his and Seals solos. The female vocalists too give some added smooth depth on the vocal side. This is another good example of the Garcia Band on stage, and is a worthy addition to other earlier Garcia Band shows we've heard. Even the songs we've all heard before have a nice sound, and are part of the Garcia musical puzzle.
The packaging is similar to previous releases in this great series. The 15 page booklet too is along the same lines as previous releases with a seven page essay by Blair Jackson and some nice period photos, plus a track list and recording information. The soundboard source tape is very good--again--similar to other soundboard releases in this series. A worthy addition to the shelf of Garcia Band releases. (Stuart Jefferson)

Die offizielle Produktbeschreibung:

GarciaLive Volume Three: December 14-15, 1974 Northwest Tour celebrating one of Jerry’s most experimental, improvisational and revered projects: Legion of Mary. Scheduled for release on October 15, 2013, GarciaLive Volume Three presents highlights from two winter 1974 performances captured during what is thought to be Legion of Mary’s first tour featuring the core lineup of Garcia, Merl Saunders, John Kahn, Martin Fierro and Ron Tutt.
Garcia’s voice and playing sound inspired and youthful while Saunders drives the soul with the organ and his gruff, husky singing voice, effortlessly paired with Kahn’s and Tutt’s steady rhythm and Fierro’s perfectly textured brass playing. The music more than delivers with the musical baton being passed around effortlessly, with leads chasing leads and the musicians following one another gracefully as evidenced on tracks like the hard-driving “Mystery Train” where the musician’s solos dance and sway with each other.

Garcia, Jerry - garcia live vol. 9: august 11th 1974, keystone berkeley [2017]
2 CD-Set!

GarciaLive Volume Nine presents Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders' August 11th, 1974 performance at Keystone in Berkeley, CA. Joining Garcia & Saunders this evening were John Kahn on bass, Martin Fierro on saxophone & flute and the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann on drums. As the site of over 200 performances by Garcia in various configurations, the Keystone Berkeley stage likely felt more like an extension of the Saunders’ family garage where the group would often practice. It was a space without pressure or pretense — one in which they could freely experiment with arrangements, new repertoire and, most of all, just jam.
Saunders’ influence on Garcia’s musical development is plainly heard on GarciaLive Volume Nine. As Garcia once noted in an interview, "Saunders filled me in on all those years of things I didn’t do. I’d never played any standards; I’d never played in dance bands. I never had any approach to the world of regular, straight music. He knew all the standards, and he taught me how bebop works. He taught me music.” While the evening’s setlist focuses primarily on standards, the approach is anything but regular or straight. A free-spirited version of The Four Tops’s R&B classic “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got)”, one of the evening’s easy highlights, showcases Garcia & Saunders' ability to reimagine standards through inventive arrangements and fiery virtuosity permeated with soul. Other standouts from this performance include a surging “(I’m A) Roadrunner” and an extended take on Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come” which clocks in at nearly 20 minutes.

Garcia, Jerry - on broadway: act one - october 28th, 1987 [2015]
3 CD-Set!

We're excited to announce the debut of On Broadway, a new archival series celebrating Jarry's magical 13 night run at the historic Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City's Broadway theater district. On Broadway: Act One - October 28th, 1987 presents three complete sets of music, including previously unrelease matinee and evening acoustic sets from the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, as well as the evening electric set from the Jerry Garcia Band. The release was produced from newly remastered two-track soundboard recordings originally captured to digital audio tape and includes previously unpublished live photos, and a liner note essay by author, historian and Grateful Dead publicist, Dennis MyNally.
"The (two) Garcia Bands' - Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, and the electrig JGB - 1987 run on Broadway from October 15th through Halloween was destined to be memorable for many reasons", as Dennis McNally states in the liner note essay. There's record setting ticket sale figures, a destiny tied to Jerry's namesake (Broadway composer Jerome Kern) and of course the sheer visual addity that is Deadheads descending upon The Great White Way, but what shines brightest is Garcia's juvial abd relaxed mood which sets the stage for the inspiring performances contained within the release. The below excerpt drom McNally's liner notes sums up the magic contained within the collection perfectly.
"The electric JGB was its usual solid self, ripping up Jerry's customany mix of Dylan (note especially Melvin's gorgeous, outstanding synthesizer work at 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door'), reggae (Peter Tosh's 'Stop That Tarin'), Mowtown (Marvin Gaye's 'How sweet it is') and Los Lobos' 'Evangeline'. The most interesting original here is the not-so-commonly sung 'Gomorrah', which garcia simply nails.
But it was the acoustic band that was unusual in this context, and it's worth some particilar attention. There are bluegrass songs - the Stanley Brothers' 'If I lose', amon others - folk songs - Libba Cotten's 'Oh babe it ain't no lie' - and country songs like the Tex Logan-arranged 'Diamond Joe' or Mel Tillis and Webb Pierce's 'I ain't nver', which has a Garcia/Nelson vocal duetthat sounds just like the Everly Brothers. The material was classy and fun and in some odd way just exactly right for Broadway".
